Honest tradeoffs

  • Resend's deliverability is good, not best. For most SaaS, "good" is enough. For "your password reset bouncing means a customer locked out forever" use cases, Postmark's deliverability edge is worth the price premium.
  • Loops is genuinely simpler than Customer.io. It is also genuinely less powerful. The right call depends on whether your campaigns need 5-condition triggers across user attributes + behavior + time, or whether they need "send X when user does Y."
  • Substack vs Beehiiv is a brand-vs-data tradeoff. Substack puts your newsletter in front of new readers; Beehiiv lets you own the relationship and migrate cleanly if needed.   • SES is cheapest only if you do the ops work. A founder spending 5 hours/month on bounce handling and reputation management is paying $500/month in opportunity cost — Resend at the same volume would be cheaper after that math.

What none of these solve

  • Email design that looks great in every client. All providers send what you build; none of them magically fix Outlook's CSS rendering. React Email helps; nothing fully solves.
  • Spam complaints from your own users. A user who marks your email as spam tanks your reputation regardless of provider. Sending less + sending more relevant beats any provider switch.
  • Inbox placement when your sender reputation is already broken. Switching providers does not reset your domain reputation; you carry that domain's history. Provider switches help cleanly only if you also rotate to a new sending subdomain (which has its own warm-up cost).
  • GDPR / CCPA compliance automatically. Per Data Trust, email providers process customer data and need to be on your sub-processor list. None of them handle compliance for you; they enable it.
